Becoming a U.S. Citizen by Naturalization

Becoming a United States citizen by naturalization is the final step in your journey to immigrate to the United States. Naturalization is the legal process by which a noncitizen becomes a U.S. citizen. There are many benefits to becoming a U.S. Citizen. First, as a naturalized U.S. citizen you are afforded the same rights and protections as U.S. born citizens. Second, you can vote in presidential and congressional elections, run for any public office, except President and Vice President, participate in jury duty, and get a U.S. passport to travel in and out of the United States without fear of being denied reentry. As a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) you can apply to become a United States citizen if you meet certain requirements. 

Step I: Confirm your Eligibility

To be eligible for Naturalization, you must be:

  1. A Lawful Permanent Resident

    • you were lawfully admitted to the U.S.for permanent residence;

  2. 18 years of age or older;

  3. ​A United States primary resident for: 

    • three (3) years if you are married to a U.S. Citizen (USC); or

    • five (5) years if you are not married to a USC spouse; 

  4. Physical present in the U.S. for at least one-half of the 3 years if you are the spouse of a USC, or one half of the 5 years if you are a permanent resident and unmarried to a USC; and 

  5. A person of Good Moral character for 5 years, or 3 years if you are married to USC spouse, prior to filing and up to when you are admitted as a U.S. Citizen.

Step II: File the N-400 Application

Once you confirm you are eligible to apply for citizenship, you must file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, and submit the filing fee with supporting documentations. Your application for naturalization is based on your permanent residence status and other factors. To avoid delays or denial of your application, you must make sure you fully understanding what is required before submitting your application.

Step III: Appear for the Interview

USCIS will process your application and schedule an interview. You must attend your scheduled interview and, unless an exception applies to you, take the civic test that will be given during the interview. The civic test is administered to assess you have an elementary level of reading, writing and understanding of the English language. You are encouraged to study for the test prior to your interview.

 

Step IV: Take the Oath of Allegiance 

If your application is approved and you passed the civil test, you will be scheduled for a public swearing-in ceremony. At the ceremony, you will recite the Oath of Allegiance by publicly swearing your loyalty to the United States and renouncing other sovereigns. After this public ceremony you are officially a United States Citizen. Congratulations!!
