TPS Designated for Ethiopia for 18 Months Due to Humanitarian Crisis.

Ethiopians currently residing in the U.S. can remain and work in the U.S. until it is safe to return to Ethiopia.


On Friday, October 21, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designated Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, due to the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia. This TPS designation means individuals who are already residing in the United States as of October 20, 2022 will be eligible to apply for TPS.


Applying for the designated TPS allows an Ethiopian nationals to temporarily remain and work in the United States until it is safe to remain to Ethiopia.


“The United States recognizes the ongoing armed conflict and the extraordinary and temporary conditions engulfing Ethiopia, and DHS is committed to providing temporary protection to those in need,” Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. To be eligible under this TPS designation, you must:

  • be an Ethiopian national; and

  • have continuously resided in the United States since October 20, 2022.

An applicant must must submit Form I-821 for TPS and Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization.
